Libby Williamson: Wonky Sisters

New Date: Saturday 15 February 2025 (Zoom)
9:00am — 4:00pm (limit 20)
$75 members; $90 non-members
A droopy eyelid, a crooked smile, or an adorable snaggletooth… let’s face it, we’ve all got our “wrinkles”! We’ll embrace our flaws, loosen up, and create wonderful Wonky Sisters.

Commercially printed fabric scraps and miscellaneous solids that have sat idle in your closet will be transformed into a luscious stash of collage material. Add your own unique patterns and paint marks with layers of color as we experiment and play with a variety of painting techniques.

And have no worries about creating anatomically correct facial proportions. We will loosen up by painting quick sketches and then choosing your favorites. The wonkier, the better! Sewing by machine and hand will secure the collages and add intriguing texture. Libby’s approach to free-motion sewing is very loose and forgiving (and fussy quilting rules will be broken).

Valerie Maser-Flanagan: Designing without Rulers

Here are Valerie's thoughts in her own words about taking the workshops.
"My initial intention in teaching two days was to have people lay out some black and white designs so that they could practice cutting out shapes and lines with a rotary cutter, lay them out on the design wall, and practice sewing some together. They could then decide what designs they liked and potentially start to lay out a larger composition that they would transfer into color the second day. The benefits of starting with black and white is that it seems less stressful to cut into black or white fabric instead of a person's favorite color or fabric. It also lets them see the effects of using reversals - a black composition on a white fabric and a white composition on black fabric. It also eliminates any decision over color and lets the focus be on the design of the composition, That being said, working with black and white may not be appealing to some people. If they feel ok about cutting into their colored fabric, knowing that not everything they cut may be used, then I am ok with them being in the second day only. They will be jumping in because the people that took day one will have begun to hone into the design(s) they want to work with."

She has offered to dialog with anyone who'd like to email her at:

These workshops feature modern quilt design and construction techniques using black and white fabrics, followed by a second workshop incorporating color. Valerie recommends taking the black and white session which focuses on value as a design element as a prerequisite to the color session.
