Minimal Design, Maximum Impact
This talk gives an overview of my process for coming up with simple graphic quilt designs, starting with stitched paper models (called maquettes). I show examples of how to translate an architectural photo into a quilt design, and have many samples of mini quilts I created using this process. The techniques I present are also great for making unique modern quilt block designs. I also talk about walking foot quilting and how to break free from stitch in the ditch.

Dizzy Circles
Add vitality and energy to your work with eccentric circles. Used symbolically in all cultures, circles are a strong design element and focal point. Now discover what happens when you move from perfect whole circles to the unexpected excitement of eccentric circles. Learn to use them confidently by fusing, appliqueing, piecing or stitching them to add movement and direction to your work. Working with a variety of spirals, helixes and other broken circles, you will learn how to add a new graphic quality by stitching or overlapping eccentric circles to make an individual free-wheeling composition. You may choose to work by hand or machine or both.

Amazing Abstracts
Create an abstract quilt that has amazing movement and drama. Go from inspiration to a simple sketch, then have fun “coloring” your sketch with bits of fabric to create a mock-up of your design – see before you sew! The design is gridded and blocks are foundation pieced using an easy sew and flip method with room for creativity and improvisation. Lots of discussion of design principles and how to use color and value to create the drama and desired effects. Based on the techniques of Ursula Kern (with her permission of course!).
For 1 day classes, students will start with a base pattern of spiral or a star burst and add their own coloration and value choices. Most participants will complete several blocks in class.

Two Questions, Many Answers: Building My Quilt Repertoire
When people look at my quilts, they often ask two questions: Where do you get your ideas? And, How do you make it? In fact I ask myself the same two questions over and over with each quilt I make. The questions don’t really change over time, but my answers change and develop with each piece I make. In this talk I illustrate two different answers to the question: where do you get your ideas? And I illustrate four different answers to the question: how do you make it? My finished quilts serve as case examples of each answer (a different quilt for each case example).

Seamed Scraps
When you cut off extra fabric from a quilt block or top, the cut scrap is often a seamed-scrap—two or more pieces of fabric connected by one or more seams. These seamed scraps make great components for scrap minis. In this workshop you will cut small pieces of scrap fabric, including seamed scraps, arrange them in an improvisational design, and sew them up. The magic of using seamed scraps in your design is that it will look like you’ve sewn tiny pieces into your project.

Improv & Abstraction in Antique Quilts
Some of our quilting ancestors were ahead of their time! We are not the first generation of quilters to discover improvisational quilting; but we may be the ones who have embraced it and made it mainstream. In this trunk show, I display antique and vintage quilts that are improvisationally constructed. So much inspiration and some great lessons can be learned from these graphic and abstract “antiques.”
